What is Eye donation ?
Eye donation is an act of donating one’s eyes after his/her death and restoration of sight through corneal transplant. Only corneal blinds can be benefitted through this process not other Blinds. It is an act of charity, purely for the benefit of the society and is totally voluntary. It is done after death. The eye donation of the deceased can be authorized by the next of kith & kin even if the deceased did not pledge to donate his / her eyes before death.
Corneal blindness can be treated by replacing the damaged cornea by a healthy donated human cornea.
What is the cornea ?
The cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. It is the main focusing surface of the eye. Vision will be dramatically reduced if the cornea becomes cloudy from disease, injury or infection.Corneal blindness is a disorder that results from the cornea becoming clouded, making a person unable to see. This condition can result from a variety of diseases, injury or infection.
Who can donate his/her Eye :-
Practically any person of any age can donate eyes and there is no upper age limit. Even if the deceased has medical history of hypertension, diabetes, asthma, tuberculosis etc., and even spectacle wearers and people who have undergone cataract operation can donate eyes.
Cataracts, poor eyesight, or age do not prevent you from being a donor. It is important for individuals wanting to be donors to inform family members of their wishes.
Is the whole eye transplanted?
No. Only the cornea can be transplanted. The entire eye may be used for other medical purpose like research and education in medical field.
Can a living person donate his/her eyes ?
No.It is not allowed.
Are there any religious conflicts involved in eye donation ?
No. Donation is a gift of sight or sight to others. As such, eye, organ and tissue donations are consistent with the beliefs and attitudes of major religions.
Why should i donate my eyes ?
There is no substitute for human tissue. The transplantation process depends upon the priceless gift of corneal donation from one human to the next. Donated human eyes help preserve and restore sight through corneal transplantation, research and education. More than 90 per cent of corneal transplant operations successfully restore vision in people suffering from blindness due to corneal problems.
What will be affect of donor appearance ( Look wise) ?
No. Great care is taken to preserve the donor's appearance. Funeral arrangements, including a viewing if desired, may proceed as scheduled. Because eye tissue procurement is performed within few hours of death there will be no delay in funeral.
What is an eye bank?
An eye bank obtains, medically evaluates and distributes eyes donated by caring individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research, and education. Eye banks are non-profit organizations.
The eye banks facilitate removal of eyes, processing of eyes and evaluation of the eyes and distribute them to the needy.
Is there any kind of fee involved for eye donation ?
No, this is illegal to buy or sell human eyes, organs, and tissues. Any costs associated with eye procurement are absorbed by the government or Eye bank society placing the tissue.
